How it Happened
- St. Lawrence scored its first goal of the night late in the first period as Tyo found the net at 16:22. Syracuse blocked a pair of shots in the last 30 seconds of the first period to preserve a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead.
- Syracuse killed off a slashing penalty in the first five minutes of the second period before St. Lawrence was called for its first infraction of the night. White evened the game at 1-1 at the 11:01 mark of the second, getting a power play assist from Saarela and Kettyle.
- But the Saints reeled off three straight goals in a 76 second stretch to take a 3-1 lead that held through the rest of the period. McLeod, Wilson, and Bahl all scored in succession. The Bahl goal was the first power play the Syracuse penalty kill unit surrendered this year.
- Early in the third period, Saarela, a graduate transfer, breathed life back into the Syracuse offense, getting her first goal with the program at the 6:37 mark of the third period. White won a faceoff that was collected by Armstong and passed out to D'Arcy at the blue line. D'Arcy wristed the puck towards the net setting up a Saarela tip-in goal.
- Syracuse managed a handful of shots from that point, but only three were on goal. The Orange pulled Kelley with 46 seconds left but could not make it a one-goal game.
- Coming into tonight, we knew it was going to be a battle. St. Lawrence is a top-10 team for a reason and we were excited for the challenge this early in the season. We knew we were going to have to weather some storms and outside of a few minutes in the second period, we did a great job. This is a team that plays for each other and is continuing to get better each game.
- There were a ton of positives from tonight: Allie Kelley was great in the crease, a first goal with 'Cuse for Bryn Saarela, and 24 blocks in a gritty effort from the entire team.
- St. Lawrence out-shot the Orange 45-15 in the game, but the third period was nearly even as Syracuse got off eight shots while the Saints managed nine.
- Syracuse's power play unit stayed strong, getting its third of the year on five chances, a 60 percent conversion rate.
- Kelley made 41 saves for the Orange, including 32 in the first two periods. She has stopped 106 shots against the Saints in the last two seasons.
- Syracuse blocked 24 Saint efforts, including four from Charlotte Hallett and three from freshmen Rylee McLeod and Jessica Cheung.
- The Orange take to the ice on Friday and Saturday for a series with RPI. Friday's 6 p.m. game will be at Tennity Ice Pavilion before the Orange head to Troy, New York to meet the Engineers at Houston Field House on Saturday. Puck drop is slated for 4 p.m.
- Friday's home game will be on FloHockey while Saturday's matchup is on ESPN+.
