Syracuse men's basketball (5-4) will welcome Georgetown (7-2) to the JMA Wireless Dome for the 100th all-time contest between the programs on Saturday, Dec. 14. The game will begin at 2:30 p.m. and will be televised live on ACC Network.
Setting The Stage
An 18-point second-half performance from Donnie Freeman helped propel the Orange past UAlbany, 102-85, on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at home. The freshman finished with a career-best 24 points, earning squad scoring honors for the second consecutive outing.
Syracuse took control of the game early, holding a 47-34 advantage at halftime. The Great Danes posed a second-half threat, shaving the Orange lead to 11 with five minutes remaining, but an eight-point burst from Freeman extended the edge, ultimately sealing the win.
Georgetown comes to the JMA Dome with a 7-2 record, most recently falling at West Virginia, 73-60, on Friday, Dec. 6. Saturday's contest will be just the second road game for the Hoyas, as they played their first eight contests at home, before traveling to face the Mountaineers.
The Hoyas are led by second-year head coach Ed Cooley, who came to Georgetown following tenures at Fairfield and Providence. In his first season at the helm, the Hoyas played to a 9-23 record.
The Syracuse-Georgetown Series
Saturday's contest will be the 100th all-time pairingbetween Syracuse and Georgetown in a series that dates back to 1929-1930. The Orange hold a 54-45 advantage in series wins over the Hoyas, including back-to-back victories in the last two seasons.
Sharp Shooting Syracuse
Syracuse is coming off its best shooting performance of the season in the win over UAlbany. The Orange shot season highs from the floor (63.5 percent), three-point arc (40.0 percent), and free throw line (88.9). The strong offensive outing helped 'Cuse record its first 100-plus point performance in the regular season since Nov. 22, 2023, in a 105-56 win against Chaminade.
Freeman Leading the Way
Freeman is coming off back-to-back 20-plus point outings against Notre Dame and UAlbany, leading Syracuse in both contests. The freshman's 14.0 points per contest is second on the team, behind J.J. Starling, who is scoring 19.8 points per game.
Freeman leads Syracuse with four double-doubles on the season and is averaging a team-high 8.7 rebounds per game.
Carlos Rising
Jaquan Carlos had a career performance in the win over UAlbany, recording his first-ever Syracuse double-double with 12 points and 12 assists. Over the last three contests, Carlos has averaged 9.0 points and 7.6 assists.
Carlos' double-double was the first that included assists since Judah Mintz posted 10 points and 13 assists against Miami on Jan. 20, 2024.
Dominating Down Low
As a team, Syracuse averages 39.2 rebounds per game, which ranks No. 3 in the ACC behind SMU (43.4) and Duke (40.2). The Orange are coming off a strong performance on the glass, outrebounding UAlbany by a +11 margin (38-27). 'Cuse also held a 24-point advantage (62-38) on points in the paint in the victory over the Great Danes.
Scouting the Hoyas
Through its first nine contests Georgetown has been led by Thomas Sorber, who is averaging a team-high of 15.4 points per contest. His season best came on Nov. 9 when he recorded 25 points against Fairfield.
Jayden Epps (14.2), Micah Peavy (13.6), and Drew Fielder (12.7) are all also averaging in double figures for the Hoyas.
As a unit, Georgetown is averaging 76.7 points per contest and has outscored its competition by 12.4 points a game. The Hoyas also collect 37.3 rebounds per game along with 16.0 assists per performance.
Freeman, Lampkin Jr. Make Preseason Watch Lists
Freeman is one of 20 players to make the preseason watch list for the 2025 Karl Malone Award, which recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's basketball. Freeman, a McDonald's All-American and the second-highest Syracuse recruit in program history, is one of two freshmen to make this year's Malone Award watch list.Â
Lampkin Jr. is one of 20 preseason watch-list candidates for the 2025 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, which goes to the top center in men's college basketball. Lampkin Jr. is in his first year with the Orange and is averaging 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest.
The list for both awards will be narrowed to 10 in late January, and then to just five in late February. In March, the five finalists for both awards will be presented to Abdul-Jabbar, Malone, and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where winners will be selected.Â
