CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Syracuse lost to Virginia, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in the second game of the weekend series in Charlottesville, Va.
The loss snaps the Orange's (13-10, 1-4 ACC) five-game winning streak, while the Cavaliers (16-9, 4-4 ACC) improve to 7-2 at Palmer Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST VIRGINIA:
Catcher Leah Boggs' homer in the second inning was the difference maker in the contest. With a runner on first, Boggs sent senior Lindsey Hendrix's 1-2 offering to dead center for the two-run shot.
Syracuse cut the home squad's lead in half in the top of the third when sophomore Peyton Schemmer scored on fellow second year Madelyn Lopez's sacrifice fly.
Neither team was able to cross the plate the remainder of the contest as the relief pitchers silenced the opposition's bats on both sides. Virginia's Courtney Layne did not allow a hit across three innings of relief while sophomore Julianna Verni yielded two hits in four innings of shutout ball for the Orange.
Hendrix suffered her second loss of the campaign, surrendering both runs on three hits in two frames. Cavalier starter Julia Cuozzo allowed one hit in four innings, picking up her second win of the season.
