
#7 Orange Win Goes Trophy as 'Cuse Captures 5th Straight Stagg Trophy

The Syracuse men's rowing team had an impressive performance at the annual Tip Goes Trophy race between the Orange, Navy and Cornell on Saturday morning. The Orange, who rank No. 7 in the latest IRCA/IRA Poll, won the varsity eight race finishing in 5:40.6 to capture their fourth-straight Goes Trophy for the first time in program history. Syracuse earned wins in the 2V8 and 3V8 to finish with 15 team points and win the Stagg Trophy for the fifth consecutive race.Â
The first varsity eight won by open water and crossed the finish line 5.6 seconds ahead of Navy (5:46.2). No. 14 Cornell crossed the line in 5:48.0 to place third. In the 2V8 race, The Orange earned a 4.4 second win over second-place Cornell (5:49.8) while the U.S. Naval Academy (5:53.9) was 4.1 seconds behind the Big Red.Â
The third varsity eight helped the Orange to a clean sweep for the Stagg Trophy, crossing the finish in 5:49.4. Cornell was second in 5:55.6 while Navy finished at 6 minutes flat for third.Â
Cornell led Syracuse by a seat with 500 meters to go in the 4V8 race, and held off a late Orange push to win by 0.8 seconds. The Big Red crossed the finish in 5:54.9 while Syracuse's final time was 5:55.7 Navy was third with a time of 5:58.8. The final race of the day was coxed fours, which featured a Navy (6:37.8) win while Syracuse (+7.2) was second and Cornell (+13.3) third.
Saturday marked the first races of the season for Syracuse's 3V8, 4V8 and 5V4. The Orange 1V8 and 2V8 are both 4-1 in head-to-head races this spring with their only losses being to defending national champions, California at the Pac-12 Invite on April 7.Â
Syracuse returns to action next weekend at the Lake Morey Invite where the Orange will race Dartmouth for the Packard Cup and Boston University for the Conlan Cup as well as line up with Georgetown in Fairlee, Vt. on Lake Morey.Â
