
Bakermans, Leeggangers Named 2024 Captains

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Ahead of the 2024 Syracuse University field hockey season, head coach Lynn Farquhar, who begins her second season at the helm, has announced captains for the season.
Graduate student Berber Bakermans and junior Lieke Leeggangers, both midfielders, have been selected to represent the Orange as captains both on and off the field.
Bakermans, who transferred to Syracuse after a four-year career at the University of Delaware, is a three-time NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region selection and was a First Team All-CAA (Coastal Athletic Association) pick last year. Bakermans wore the captain's band for two seasons at Delaware. A key player for the Fightin' Blue Hens, Bakermans appeared in 60 games, including 54 starts. In that time, she racked 46 points on 10 goals while doling out 26 assists.
Leeggangers is set for her first season as a team captain, coming off a highly successful sophomore campaign. Last fall, Leeggangers played in 18 games, missing one contest to an upper body injury. She started in 15 games, including the final 14 of her season. Leeggangers accounted for six points, backed by four assists and the game-tying goal to help lead Syracuse past No. 7 Liberty in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The midfielder was one of two primary penalty corner inserts for the Orange as well. In her career, Leeggangers has seen time in 38 games, including 31 starts. She has 15 points to her credit, braced by four goals and seven assists.
Syracuse kicks off the 2024 season this weekend with a pair of matches in the Keystone State. Action begins Friday, August 30 with a 3 p.m. clash at Lock Haven, followed by a noon showdown at No. 16 Penn State on Sunday, Sept. 1.
