SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team welcomes Canisius to SU Soccer Stadium for a Tuesday night (Sept. 17) matchup. The contest, which will celebrate Miliary Appreciation Night, is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
Admission and parking are free for all in attendance. The first 100 fans at the match will also receive a free Syracuse athletics bucket hat.
'Cuse Update
The Orange dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 17 Virginia Tech on Friday, Sept. 13 at SU Soccer Stadium in their first home ACC game of the season. The Hokies recorded two goals in two minutes during the second half to secure their victory.
In the loss to VT, graduate student Sam Layton and senior Tomas Hut went the distance for their sixth-straight game, as neither player has been subbed off the pitch this campaign. Freshman Chimere Omeze also played the full 90, something he has done in five of the Orange's six games.
Junior Michael Acquah has been a force in the passing game for the Orange. The forward has dished out three helpers this season, which puts him in a tie for second in the conference.
The Orange offense has put together as many chances as anyone in the ACC, taking 112 shots in six games, the second most in the league. 'Cuse's average of 18.67 shots per game is also the third most in the conference.
2024 Promotional Schedule: Military Appreciation Night
Syracuse men's soccer invites the Orange Community out to Tuesday's Military Appreciation Night.
The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a Syracuse athletics bucket hat. There will also be a halftime Hometown Hero presentation.
Additionally at every game, fans can enter to win a team-autographed soccer ball giveaway. The winner will be selected on Senior Day.
Scouting the Golden Griffins
The Golden Griffins have already matched their win total from a season ago, playing to a 2-3-1 record through six contests this campaign.
Most recently, Canisius faced Saint Francis (Pa.), overcoming a one-score deficit to earn a 3-3 draw with the Red Flash. The Golden Griffins used an 85th-minute set piece goal from sophomore AJ Zarcone to earn the point.
Senior goalkeeper Jack Petrie has been strong in the net for Canisius this season, earning a Hercules Tires MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honor on Monday, Sept. 9. The Williamsville, N.Y. native earned the distinction for his efforts in Canisius' two shutout victories over Central Connecticut State (Sept. 2) and VMI (Sept. 6). The two clean sheet wins marked the first two shutouts of the senior's career and the first consecutive victories for the Golden Griffins' keeper.
Series History
The Orange have never lost to the Golden Griffins, holding a 9-0-1 advantage in the lifetime series between programs. The teams, however, have not faced off since the 2011 season, as Tuesday's contest will end the 13-year drought of no regular season matches between the New York schools.
Tuesday's game taking place in Syracuse is a familiar theme to the all-time series, with eight of the 10 contests between the Orange and the Griffins having been played in Central New York. Syracuse has traveled to Buffalo only two times ('85, '89).
Up Next
Syracuse hits the road to face the Louisville Cardinals on Friday, Sept. 20 for another ACC road contest. The match will begin at 7 p.m. and will be live on ACC Network Extra.
