Hekkenberg Named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After posting a career-best six saves on Sunday, Syracuse University field hockey netminder Vera Hekkenberg was named as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced its weekly awards Tuesday afternoon.
Syracuse (4-1) got half a dozen saves from Hekkenberg, who has played in the second half of each game this season by design, against visiting Lafayette. The rookie made four of her six saves in the fourth quarter as the Orange withstood five penalty corners in a three minute span in the fourth.
The 2-1 win over Lafayette marked the first career win for Hekkenberg, who also played 30 minutes Friday afternoon against Northeastern. The Naarden, Netherlands native did not need to make a save against the Huskies.
For the week, Hekkenberg finished with a .857 save percentage and a goals against average of 1.00.
The Orange hit the road for the next two weeks, leading off on Friday, Sept. 20 for a 5 p.m. showdown against No. 2 North Carolina. Syracuse and the Tar Heels meet on ACC Network Extra at Karen Shelton Stadium.
