From the Start
- It's a new year but the mission remains the same: Protect Coyne. Syracuse hosts #14 Ohio State for its 2024 home opener.
- The Orange draw the bright lights this weekend as ACC Network will carry Sunday's noon game with Leah Secondo and Suzanne Bush on the call.
- Syracuse is coming off a 2-0 opening weekend thats to versatile scoring in the first game, a 9-0 win at Lock Haven with eight different goal getters, followed by a 2-1 top 20 win on the road at No. 16 Penn State.
- The Orange and Buckeyes meet for the first time since a 3-2 Syracuse overtime win in Columbus back in 2014. The game-winning goal was provided by current assistant coach Emma Russell '16, then in her junior season.
Noted Field Hockey Conference, The ACC
- There was little doubt left after the 2024 season that the ACC is THE force in college field hockey as the league went 13-3 overall in the opening weekend of play.
- This weekend boasts another heavy dose of ACC vs. B1G action. In addition to the Orange hosting Ohio State, additional clashes include Duke and Northwestern (Friday), Boston College and Maryland (Friday), Duke and Maryland (Sunday), and Boston College and Northwestern.
- During opening week, the ACC went 5-3 against the Big Ten. Syracuse, Virginia, UNC, and Cal all picked up at least one win over B1G programs.
- This year, the ACC becomes a bicoastal conference as California and Stanford are set to begin play in the league after long stints in the America East Conference and the field hockey specific NorPac.
- The 2024 ACC Championship tournament will be held at Wake Forest University from November 5 until the title clash on Friday, November 8.
Punches in Bunches
- Syracuse's offense had a strong showing in the opening weekend, kicking things off with a 9-0 win over Lock Haven.
- The nine Orange goals, paired with eight assists, led to 26 points in the opener.Â
- Those three marks lead Division I in single game totals for games, assists, and points. The next-closest point total was Temple's 20 against Queen's (N.C.) with seven goals and six assists.
- Once the Orange got the lid off the season, Syracuse never went more than 15 minutes with scoring at Lock Haven.
In the National Rankings: August 27 (Preseason)
- On the cusp of opening the 2024 season, Syracuse University field hockey was ranked 10th in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Preseason Coaches Poll.
- Fresh off a third-straight NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal berth, Syracuse landed in the 10 spot with 512 total points.
- The Orange will face three of the top five teams in the preseason poll: No. 2 North Carolina with 899 points and 17 first-place votes, No. 3 Virginia with 783 points and a pair of top selections and No. 5 Duke, which garnered 714 points. Northwestern was the top pick with 918 points and 27 first-place votes, and No. 4 Maryland with 771 points and the two outstanding first-place nods.
- Seven of the nine teams in the ACC were ranked this week: No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Virginia, No. 5 Duke, No. 7 Louisville, No. 10 Syracuse, No. 17 Boston College, and No. 18 Wake Forest.
- All told, the Orange will face nearly half of the teams ranked in the preseason poll. In addition to the ACC slate, Syracuse takes on No. 14 Ohio State in its home opener on Sept. 8, No. 15 Princeton on Oct. 6, and No. 16 Penn State this Sunday, Sept. 1. Additionally, Syracuse most recently scrimmaged a Rutgers team ranked ninth in the preseason poll with 524 points.
