Syracuse women's basketball (9-13, 3-8 ACC) takes down Virginia Tech (15-8, 6-6 ACC) on the road, 93-87, Thursday night. The Orange secured their 800th program win thanks to another career night from Sophie Burrows and five different Orange players in double figure scoring.
Â
Sophie Burrows scored 17 points in the first half and hit eight three pointers on the way to a career-high 28-point performance, her second consecutive game setting a new career-high in scoring. Burrows shot 9-of-15 from the field and 8-of-12 from beyond the arc, one trey shy of the program record. Kyra Wood (18 pts), Georgia Woolley (14 pts), Dominique Camp (12 pts), and Izabel Varejao (10 pts) all scored in double figures tonight, with Camp recording a double-double with 10 assists. SU had 24 assists in the contest, the most by an opponent inside Cassell Coliseum since UConn in 2001.
Â
Virginia Tech was paced by both Carleigh Wenzel and Carys Baker with 24 points each.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange and Hokies traded blows to start the game, before SU started to take control. Sophie Burrows had back-to-back threes to take the lead with 6:25 to go in the opening frame, before a 9-0 run by the Orange gave them some breathing room. Six different Orange players scored in the second quarter, including three more treys from Burrows to give 'Cuse a 49-37 lead going into the halftime break. Virginia Tech made the game close in the third, using an 8-0 run early and a 5-0 run in the closing minute to cut the margin to three with 0:32 left in the quarter. Izabel Varejao made a jumper in the final seconds to give the Orange a 70-65 lead going into the final frame. VT tied the game up with 6:53 to play in the game (the first tie since 5:26 in the first quarter), before Wood and Burrows would score to give 'Cuse back the lead. The Orange held on, besting the Hokies 93-87 for their third conference win of the season and the 800th win in program history.
