
Boeheim's Back! Orangemen Down Bulls, 80-68

SYRACUSE, NY - Lifted by head coach Jim Boeheim's return from a three-game medical leave, 18th-ranked Syracuse ended its two-game losing streak with an 80-68 win against South Florida on Thursday evening in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse extended its record to 10-2, while the Bulls' stand at 7-2.
South Florida stayed even with the Orange in the opening minutes of the game, but Syracuse erupted on a 25-5 run midway through the first half to take a 19-point lead, 38-19. SU capitalized on 17 South Florida turnovers and its defense forced 12 steals to take a 40-22 advantage at intermission. Junior DeShaun Williams scored 12 of his 20 points in the first half, including three three-pointers.
The Bulls threatened in the second half, coming within seven points of Syracuse, 59-52, with 6:04 left in the game. SU's free-throw shooting,including a 20-of-24 effort in the second half, sealed the final 12-point margin.
Senior forward Preston Shumpert, who tallied a squad-best 22 points, became the program's leader in career three-point baskets with 198. He surpassed the old mark of 197 set by Lawrence Moten. Shumpert also moved into 22nd place on SU's career scoring list (1,432), passing Otis Hill (1,416).
Junior forward Kueth Duany recorded his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Williams had a season-high nine assists and freshman forward Hakim Warrick grabbed a career-best six offensive rebounds.
