
James Scores 21 in 81-52 Win Versus Providence

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Senior guard Jaime James (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) just missed a triple-double with 21 points, eight assists and eight rebounds to lead the Syracuse women's basketball team to an 81-52 victory versus Providence at Manley Field House on Jan. 12. The Orangewomen improved to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST. The Friars are now 8-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
The Orangewomen used a harassing zone defense to slow down Providence in the opening minutes of the game. The Friars were held without a field goal for more than seven minutes at one point in the first half. With SU leading, 22-11, at the 6:44 mark of the opening stanza, James scored eight consecutive points in a span of 47 seconds to put the Orangewomen ahead, 30-11. Syracuse led 42-20 at halftime and held the Friars to 28 percent shooting from the field (7-of-25).
PC would get only as close as 64-43 at the 8:14 mark of the second half before SU went on a 17-8 run to close out the game.
James shot 7-of-11 from the field (63.6 percent) and added a blocked shot and two stelas. Four other Orangewomen scored in double figures. Sophomore guard Julie McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y./Catholic Central) scored 16, senior forward Leaf Newman (Perris, Calif./Perris) had 15, followed by 14 points from senior forward Jazmine Wright (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) and 12 points from sophomore forward Shannon Perry (Providence, R.I./La Salle). Perry also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Providence center Dani Trippany scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Providence. Jessica Simmonds was the only other Friar in double figures with 10.
SU held a 41-34 rebounding advantage in the game and forced 25 turnovers. The 29-point margin of victory is the second-largest for the Orangewomen in a home BIG EAST game. Syracuse defeated Pittsburgh, 86-50, during the 1987-88 season at Manley Field House.
Syracuse will next play at Miami on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The Hurricanes are 9-6 overall and 2-3 in the BIG EAST after losing at Connecticut, 96-50, on Saturday.
