
Perry Scores Career-High 28 Points in Win at Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa.– Sophomore Shannon Perry (Providence, R.I./LaSalle) scored 17 of her career-best 28 points in the second half to lead the Syracuse women's basketball team to a 75-71 victory on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Fitzgerald Field House. Perry also completed her second consecutive double-double with 11 rebounds. The Orangewomen are now 12-6 overall and 5-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Panthers now stand at 6-13 overall and 1-7 in league play.
Perry's second half barrage helped the Orangewomen overcome a 13-point deficit during the final 12:33 of the game. The Orangewomen trailed, 54-41, but finished the game on a 34-17 run. Perry scored all 17 of her second half points during the surge. She also assisted on three other baskets and made all seven of her free throws. For the game, Perry shot 8-of-11 from the floor and 12-of-13 from the free throw line.
SU trailed 37-34 at halftime, but was able to tie the score at 39-39 with just less than 17 minutes remaining. The Panthers then went on a 12-0 run. Syracuse narrowed the Panther lead to 67-65 with 2:02 left when Perry kicked to a wide-open Jaime James (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) who buried a three-pointer to give SU a 68-67. After Dallas Williams made one of two free throws for the Panthers to tie the score, James again put SU ahead with a steal and a layup with 1:13 left. The Orangewomen made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Three other players scored in double figures for the Orangewomen. James hit for 12 points, while senior forward Leaf Newman (Perris, Calif./Perris) scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Senior forward Jazmine Wright (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) added 10 points.
Laine Selwyn just missed a triple-double for the Panthers. She led Pittsburgh with 23 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Bettina Love also scored 18 points for the Panthers. Jessica Ryndycz chipped in with 10.
The Orangewomen outrebounded Pittsburgh, 39-33. SU is now 8-0 when holding the rebounding advantage.
SU's 12 victories matches last season's win total. The 13-point deficit was the largest comeback for Syracuse this season. The Orangewomen trailed by 11 points in their season-opening victory at Long Beach State.
Syracuse continues its BIG EAST road swing with a matchup at defending national champion Notre Dame on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
