SYRACUSE, NY - Senior tri-captain Carrie Soults (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day School) scored four goals to lead eighth-ranked Syracuse to a 16-8 victory against Colgate on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome.
The Orangewomen (5-2) scored 11 goals in the first half and held the Raiders (2-7) to only three in the fifth meeting between the two teams.
Soults started off the scoring 27 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal, and sophomore Danielle Lillis (West Islip, NY/West Islip) followed with a tally from Kim Wayne (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) to take a 2-0 lead after two minutes of play. The Orangewomen would score four more goals before Rebecca Sandler found the back of the cage for Colgate.
Syracuse responded with three goals, including Ellen Rust’s (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) second tally of her career, to go up, 9-1. Caitlin Houck came off the bench for the Raiders to score the first of her team-leading three goals before Soults finished the first-half scoring for the Orangewomen with two tallies.
Freshman Monica Joines (White Hall, MD/North Harford) scored her first two collegiate goals in the second half for SU. Syracuse and Colgate would each score five goals in the second period, but the Orangewomen’s early tallies would be enough to seal the win.
Syracuse returns to action on Saturday, March 30 when it faces Connecticut at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
