
SU Meets Temple In NIT Consolation Game

Syracuse (23-12) had its three-game NIT win streak stopped by South Carolina in the semifinals on March 26, 66-59. Temple (18-15) lost to Memphis in the other semifinal, 78-77.
Syracuse and Temple have met 28 times previously. The Orangemen have a 16-12 advantage in the overall series.
The most recent encounter between the clubs was in the 1989 Carrier Classic. The two teams battled in the championship game and SU was victorious, 73-56. SU's Billy Owens was the Carrier Classic MVP and the all-tournament team included the Orangemen's Derrick Coleman and Stephen Thompson and Temple's Duane Causwell and Mark Macon.
Syracuse senior Preston Shumpert owns a squad-best 20.7 scoring average. Ranked sixth in career scoring at SU, Shumpert could become the first Orangemen to average more than 20 points a game since John Wallace (22.2) in 1995-96.
