SOUTH BEND, IN - The 11th-ranked Fighting Irish snapped No. 7 Syracuse’s four-game winning streak with a 12-7 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Meyo Field.
The Notre Dame (7-1, 3-0 BIG EAST) women’s lacrosse program won its first game against the Orangewomen (6-3, 2-2 BIG EAST), who now hold a 4-1 series advantage.
Syracuse managed only two goals in the first half and was not able to overcome the deficit in the second period. The Orangewomen came within three, 9-6, in the second half after two goals by sophomore Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) and one tally by attacker Danielle Lillis (West Islip, NY/West Islip), but Notre Dame responded with three straight goals to hold onto the advantage.
The Fighting Irish jumped out early with a 3-0 lead, before senior tri-captain Carrie Soults (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day School) put Syracuse on the board with her only tally of the game to make it 3-1. After Notre Dame found the back of the cage three more times, freshman Monica Joines (White Hall, MD/North Harford) scored SU’s second goal of the half, 6-2. Joines has scored in each of the past four games for the Orangewomen. The Irish scored on all three of its free-position attempts to help take an 8-2 halftime lead.
Senior Karen Healy (Freeport,NY/Freeport) scored her first goal of the season to start off the second period. Zimmer and Lillis would then score two goals each in the second stanza, but it would not be enough to overcome the first-half deficit.
Notre Dame outshot Syracuse, 23-20, and goalie Jen White made 12 saves for the Irish.
Syracuse continues its road trip on Saturday, April 6 when it travels to New Jersey to play Rutgers at 1:00 p.m.
