
No. 7 Orangewomen Come Up Short Against Rutgers, 10-9

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Senior Karen Healy (Freeport, NY/NFreeport) scored her fourth goal of the game with 18 seconds left to bring seventh-ranked Syracuse within one, but the Orangewomen ran out of time as Rutgers defeated SU, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon.
Rutgers earns its first BIG EAST win (5-6, 1-2) of 2002, while Syracuse (6-4, 2-3) loses its second straight conference game.
Syracuse came back from a 6-4 deficit in the second half to tie the game at 6-6 with 24:42 left in the game after two goals by Healy. Sophomores Danielle Lillis (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) each followed with a tally to give SU its first lead of the game, 8-6.
The Scarlet Knights would hold the Orangewomen scoreless for the next 20 minutes, while RU found the back of the cage four more times to go up, 10-8. After Healy’s goal, SU put together a final attack but were unable to convert in the remaining seconds.
Rutgers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before SU scored its first goal of the game with 4:20 left in the first half. Freshman Caitlyn Dragon (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) scored the first goal of her career with :26 left until intermission to tie the game at 4-4.
Claire Grooms led Rutgers with four goals and Lisa Savage followed with two.
Syracuse returns to action on Sunday, April 14 when it faces New Hampshire at 1:00 in the Carrier Dome.
