
McBride Scores 23 in SU Win

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior guard Julie McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y./Catholic Central) scored 23 points to lead the Orangewomen basketball team to a 76-47 win versus Cornell at Manley Field House on Thursday, January 2. SU has now won five of its last seven games to improve to 5-6. Cornell stands at 4-5.
McBride made a career-high four three-pointers and recorded six assists in the contest, tying her with Theresa Quilty for eighth on the Orangwomen's all-time career assists list at 356. It was also the first game in her career that she did not commit a turnover.
Junior Shannon Perry (Providence, R.I./LaSalle) added 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to record her ninth double-double of the season. Perry sank a pair of free throws with 1:48 remaining in the game to move into third all-time at SU in free throws made with 263.
Defensively, Syracuse had their best effort of the season, giving up a season-low 47 points and tallying a season-high 20 steals. Junior April Jean (Sacramento, Calif./Coffeyville C.C.) had a career-high seven swipes, and sophomore Rochelle Coleman (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) had five steals, also a career high, to go along with 14 points and a career-high four assists.
Junior Katie Romey led Cornell with 11 points and also added six rebounds.
The Orangewomen used a 16-3 run to open the game and led 23-13 with 8:28 remaining in the first half. Four straight layups by the Orangewomen gave them a 36-18 lead with 3:45 left in the first stanza. The Big Red defense held Syracuse scoreless for the remainder of the first frame, but still trailed the Orangwomen 36-20 at halftime.
The Orangewomen started the second half much like the first, outscoring the Big Red 15-4 to extend their lead to 25, 51-26, with 15:11 left to play in the game. A two-point basket by McBride gave the Orangewomen a game-high 34-point advantage with 10:04 left. Syracuse never trailed in the game and cruised the rest of the way for a 29-point victory.
The game was the final non-conference tilt of the season for the Orangewomen. SU opens BIG EAST play on Saturday, January 4 at Virginia Tech. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
