PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Sophomore goalkeeper Alim Karim tied his career high with 12 saves to lead the Syracuse men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie at 13th-ranked Rutgers on Tuesday, October 14. The Orangemen are now 2-6-5 overall and 0-3-4 in the BIG EAST, while the Scarlet Knights are 7-3-2 overall and 4-1-2 in league play.
The game was SU's third ties in its last four games, including two draws with top-25 opponents.
The Orangemen scored first just more than seven minutes into the game when freshman Frank Bruno, streaking down the left side, took a pass from senior Kirk Johnson and lobbed the ball over the head of Rutgers goalkeeper Lobis Ancin. It was Bruno's team-leading third goal of the season.
Johnson's assist was the 16th of his career, moving him into a tie for eighth place on the Orangemen's all-time list with John Andrade.
The Scarlet Knights tied the game in the 77th minute. Josh Gros broke down the middle of the box and touched a ball by Anthony Schiavino into the back of the net. It was Gros' team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Senior defender Chris Fehrle saved a would-be game-winning goal in the first overtime when he cleared the ball from a Rutgers player who recovered a rebound 10 yards from the SU goal line with an open net.
The game nearly ended with 5:22 left in the second overtime. Rutgers played a ball toward the SU goal, but Karim came out and gained possession. He collided with Rutgers' Chris Karcz causing the ball to ricochet out of Karim's grip and into the back of the net, but the referee disallowed the score because of interference.
Ancin made one save for the Scarlet Knights
Rutgers outshot the Orangemen, 24-6, and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The game was the seventh overtime game of the season for the Orangemen, the most since the 1990 team had nine games go past regulation. Six of those games have gone into a double-overtime, a school-record.
