
Orangemen Lose to Virginia Tech

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team was defeated at home for the first time this season, 5-1 versus Virginia Tech at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, October 5. The Orangemen are now 2-6-3 overall and 0-3-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Hokies improved to 8-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the conference.
Virginia Tech never trailed in the game, scoring the first goal just 3:33 into the first half. Ken Jonmaire converted on a header for his fourth goal of the season. Charlie Howe and Harold Russell had the assists on the play. The Hokies took a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute on another header, this one by Scott Spangler off a cross from Peer Rogge.
The Orangemen pulled to within 2-1 just less than six minutes into the second half. Junior forward Jarett Park was brought down in the box and the Orangemen were awarded a penalty kick. Freshman Frank Bruno put the ball into the right side of the net for his second goal of the season. It was Syracuse's second penalty-kick goal in as many games and their third of the season.
Syracuse put pressure on the Hokies' defense, but did not score the rest of the contest. With the Orangemen pressing for the game-tying goal, Virginia Tech was able to score three unanswered times in the final nine minutes of the contest. Rogge, Howe and Bobby O'Brien all scored to set the final score. Howe finished the game with a goal and three asssits. Rogge added a goal and an assist.
Virginia Tech goalkeeper Chase Harrison made five saves in the victory. SU keeper Alim Karim did not make a save.
The Orangemen play the last of three consecutive home games on Friday, October 10 when they host West Virginia. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
