
SU's Second Half Run Overtakes Huskies

STORRS, CT - The Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team outscored Connecticut in the second half, 6-1, to overtake the Huskies and secure a 9-5 win on Saturday afternoon in Storrs, CT.
The No. 8 Orangewomen (5-2, 3-1 BIG EAST) won their fourth straight game and third in the BIG EAST, while Connecticut (4-2, 0-1) stumbled in its opening conference game.
Junior Leigh-Ann Zimmer led the team with six points (four goals, two assists). She moved into second place at SU in career points with 134 (99 goals, 35 assists). Sophomore Monica Joines, senior Kim Wayne and junior Danielle Lillis all registered two points each.
SU found itself down, 2-0, for the first time all season in the opening minutes of the first half. Joines opened the scoring up for the Orangewomen with two back-to-back goals to tie the game at 2-2 at 21:57. After UConn regained the lead with two more goals, junior Cristine Doran tallied her third goal of the season to bring SU within one at half, 4-3.
Syracuse scored the first five goals of the second half to take its largest lead of the game, 8-4. Lillis tied the game at 4-4 at 31:02 and Zimmer followed two minutes later to give SU its first lead of the game, 5-4. Zimmer scored two more goals in the run before finishing the scoring with 26 seconds left in the game.
Senior co-captain Ellen Rust and freshman Stephanie Walker led the defense. Rust caused two turnovers, and Walker recorded two caused turnovers, three draw controls and one groundball. Senior co-captain Carla Gigon made eight saves in goal for SU.
Kelly Feeley led Connecticut with two goals.
Syracuse returns to action on Wednesday, April 2 when it faces Notre Dame at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
