
Orangewomen Down Fighting Irish, 9-6

SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse women’s lacrosse team leaped to an early 5-0 lead and held on to defeat Notre Dame, 9-6, on Wednesday night in the Carrier Dome.
The Orangewomen (7-2, 4-1 BIG EAST) extended their winning streak to five games, while Notre Dame (3-4, 2-1) lost its first conference matchup. Head coach Lisa Miller earned her 60th career win with the victory. She now holds a record of 60-25 (.706) in her five-plus years as head coach.
Junior Leigh-Ann Zimmer extended her scoring streak to 32 games with four goals and notched her 100th career goal with her first tally. Sophomore Monica Joines recorded a hat trick and has now scored at least one goal in the last seven games. Senior Kim Wayne scored a goal and dished out the team’s two assists.
Zimmer and Joines each scored two goals in SU’s early scoring streak. After Danielle Shearer put Notre Dame on the scoreboard for the first time at 27:43, sophomore Jessica Bell closed out the scoring for the half off an assist from Wayne to give SU a 6-1 halftime lead.
Shearer scored off two free positions to bring Notre Dame within three, 6-3, at the start of the second half. Zimmer responded with two goals and Joines added one of her own to extend SU’s lead to six, 9-3, at 44:37. Notre Dame engineered a comeback with three straight goals from Meredith Simon, but the comeback fell short as time expired.
Shearer and Simon led Notre Dame with three goals each.
Syracuse returns to action on Saturday, April 5 when it faces Rutgers at 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
