SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team scored five goals in the first 10 minutes and then the defense took over, allowing only one goal in the second half to secure an 8-6 victory against Rutgers on Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.
The Orangewomen (8-2, 5-1 BIG EAST) are off to their best start since the inaugural 1998 season when the team started 9-2.
Junior Leigh-Ann Zimmer and senior Kim Wayne led the Orangewomen with three points each. Zimmer, a Tewaaraton Trophy candidate, exteneded her scoring streak to 33 games with her two goals and has scored at least two goals in SU’s first 10 games. Sophomore Monica Joines increased her scoring streak to eight games with two goals versus the Scarlet Knights.
Sophomore Jessica Bell scored two of SU’s opening five goals to help give the Orangewomen an early 5-0 lead. Rutgers responded with four straight goals to come within one, 5-4, at 18:02. The momentum switched back to Syracuse after senior Jessica Trombley found the back of the net off an assist from Wayne. Zimmer tallied her second goal before Melissa Mosey connected on a free position attempt to put Rutgers within two at the half, 7-5.
Defense took over in the second half with each team only permitting one goal. Joines scored SU’s lone goal of the second period. Senior Carla Gigon (Hingham, MA/Hingham) made 10 saves in goal for SU.
Syracuse returns to action on Friday, April 11 when it travels to New Hampshire to face Dartmouth at 6 p.m.
