
Dartmouth Halts Orangewomen's streak, 14-11

Box Score HANOVER, NH - The Syracuse women’s lacrosse team rallied in the second half with seven goals but could not overcome a seven-goal first-half deficit as Dartmouth defeated the Orangewomen, 14-11, on Friday evening in Hanover, NH.
The No. 13 Big Green (6-2) snapped eighth-ranked Syracuse’s (8-3) six-game winning streak and evened the series record at 2-2.
Dartmouth jumped out early on Syracuse, scoring seven unanswered goals in the first 18 minutes of the game. The Orangewomen found themselves in an uncomfortable position having never been down by more than two goals at the start of any game in the 2003 season.
Sophomore Monica Joines scored to put SU on the board, 7-1, at 19:58. Joines extended her scoring streak to nine games with four goals in the match. Junior Leigh-Ann Zimmer followed Joines with the first of her five goals, tying a career high. The Tewaaraton Trophy candidate also increased her scoring streak to 34 games.
The Big Green connected on 10-of-14 shots in the first half to lead at intermission, 10-4. Lana Smith tallied three of Dartmouth’s 10 goals in the first period.
The Orangewomen came within four goals of the lead, 11-7, at 38:27 after goals by Joines, Zimmer and senior Jessica Trombley. After Smith found the back of the net for Dartmouth, Joines tallied her third goal to trim the deficit back to four, 12-8, at 42:29.
Zimmer and Joines started a rally late in the second half with each player scoring off free-positions. Zimmer closed the gap to three, 14-11, but SU could not get any further as time expired. The SU defense limited Dartmouth to four goals off nine shots in the second half.
Zimmer moved into second place on SU’s all-time goals list with 110 goals.
Smith led Dartmouth with five goals. Eight other Dartmouth players recorded at least one point in the Big Green victory.
Syracuse returns to action on Wednesday, April 16 when it hosts Cornell in the Carrier Dome.
