ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team lost its second game in a row to a top-25 opponent, 2-1 at 20th-ranked Hartwick on Wednesday, September 24. The Orangemen are now 2-4-2, while the Hawks improved to 6-1-0.
After a scoreless first half in which both teams had chances to score, the Hawks netted the first goal of the game in the 58th minute. Tyler Hemming headed a shot into the net off a corner kick by Edwin Ruiz. Ruiz had scored off a corner earlier in the game, but the goal was disallowed because of a foul. The Hawks struck again in the 85th minute with what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Ruiz assisted again off another corner kick, this time finding Josh Herrera who deflected the ball across the goal line.
The Orangemen scored their goal with 39 seconds remaining in the contest. Freshman Frank Bruno gathered a loose ball that deflected off a Hartwick defender and slotted it in the bottom right corner. It was Bruno's first career goal and points.
Junior David Rabazzi started in goal for the Orangemen and made two saves in the first half. He was replaced at halftime by junior Rich Scheer who made one save in the loss. Hartwick's Josh Wagenaar made one save for his sixth victory.
The Hawks outshot the Orangemen, 10-7, and held a 16-8 advantage in corner kicks. Hartwick has now won the last two meetings at Elmore Field.
Syracuse plays its third consecutive top-25 opponent on Sunday, September 28 at Boston College. The game kicks off a six-game stretch versus BIG EAST teams. The Orangemen return home on Thursday, October 2 versus Notre Dame.
