The Orange played with five players for the third time in four matches. After taking the default win at No. 3 doubles, Jenny Munroe and Stephanie Price defeated senior Trine Lise Juliussen and sophomore Wei-Ming Leong, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles to give UMass the first point. Freshmen Ashley Lipton and Katie Bramante remained a perfect 3-0 at home with an 8-6 victory against Christine Liehr and Dorothy Iwanowicz at No. 2 doubles. The pair won five straight points after being down 6-3 to take the win.
Massachusetts led, 2-0, with a walkover win at No. 6 singles. Iwanowicz defeated SU freshman Kendyl Severino, 6-1, 6-0, to give the Minutewomen a 3-0 lead. Munroe retired from her No. 2 singles match against Lipton in the second set to give SU its first point of the afternoon. Juliussen defeated Sasha Edelstein, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 and Bramante defeated Price, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3 to tie the score at 3-3.
Leong battled Liehr for the match at No. 4 singles. Leong won the first set, 6-2, but lost the second, 1-6. Liehr tied the match, 5-5, but Leong won the last two points to clinch the point and the match for Syracuse.
"Awesome. It feels awesome," Leong said about winning the decisive match. "To get the winning point, it's just awesome - especially after we lost the first two in the last match (against Colgate and Dartmouth)."
"Wei-Ming really came through," head coach Mac Gifford said. "And Trine has really stepped up in the leadership department. I couldn't do without it.
"(The team) really worked at it. This feels good to me, and it really feels good to them. They're very resilient."
Syracuse plays its next two matches at home. The Orange host Army on Friday, February 20, at 3:00 p.m., and take on Cornell on Sunday, February 22, at noon.
