SU needed to win at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to earn the point because the Hokies won the No. 3 match by default. However, freshmen Katie Bramante and Ashley Lipton lost to Ashley James and Carolyn Kramer at No. 2, 8-3, and senior Trine Lise Juliussen and sophomore Wei-Ming Leong lost to Elissa Kinard and Felice Lam, 8-5, at No. 1.
In singles, Leong lost to James, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot and Juliussen lost to Anat Elazari, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1. Lipton, Bramante and freshman Kendyl Severino took their singles opponents to seven points in the first sets of each of their matches, but they all lost in two sets. Bramante lost to Lam, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 3. Meredith Holmes defeated Severino, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 5. Ginger Lowdermilk defeated Lipton, 7-6, 7-6(3) at No. 2.
The Orangewomen will try for their first win of the season against Furman on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Blacksburg.
