
Zimmer's Last Second Tally Lifts SU Past Massachusetts, 12-11

SYRACUSE, N.Y.
With the Orangewomen down by one, 11-10, senior Cristine Doran notched her first tally of 2004 with 36 seconds left in regulation to tie the score. Sophomore Stephanie Walker coralled the ensuing draw control as the Orangewomen worked the ball into the offensive zone. With 10 seconds left on the clock Zimmer made her move toward the net and beat Massachusetts’ goalie Joey Rubin to give SU the lead. The Minutewomen earned the following draw control, but could not muster a shot as time ran out.
Zimmer finished with a team-best six points on four goals and two assists. The scoring total was one point shy of her career-high seven points, which she tallied against Virginia in the season-opener. Zimmer is six points away from tying Katrina Hable for SU’s career scoring record. Hable had 183 points from 1998-2001.
SU tallied five of the game’s last six goals, with three of Zimmer’s four tallies coming during that stretch. With Massachusetts holding a 10-7 advantage, Zimmer scored at 51:24 to pull SU within two. Junior Monica Joines found the back of cage 2:55 later to cut the deficit to 10-9, but the Minutewomens’ Maura McGarrity increased the Massachusetts margin to two on a goal at 55:06. Zimmer’s scored 1:30 later to set the stage for the final seconds.
Joines registered her second hat trick of the season in the contest. She also had three draw controls and two ground balls. Sophomore Melody Agnew recorded a career-best two goals in the game and senior Danielle Lillis also scored twice against the Minutewomen. Junior Courtney Palladino recorded six draw controls in the the match and leads the Orangewomen with 14 on the season.
SU jumped on Massachusetts early, building a 4-0 margin at 18:28. Agnew notched back-to-back goals in the spurt as the Orangewomen dominated the pace of play. Hope Zelinger got the Minutewomen on the board at 23:03, but Joines answered with a goal for the Orangewomen as SU regained a four-goal lead. The Minutewomen scored three of half’s final five goals to head into the lockerroom trailing, 7-4. Zelinger and McGarrity did the the damage for Massachusetts, accounting for all four of the Minutewomen’s first-period goals. SU outshot Massachusetts 19-9 and held a 10-2 advantage in the draw controls in the first frame.
In the second half it was just the opposite as Massachusetts controlled play, winning 10-of-13 draw controls in the period, and scoring six unanswered goals to take a 10-7 lead with 9:45 left.
McGarrity and Zelinger each finished with four points in the match and Tracey Drown contributed three points on three second-half goals. Syracuse native Kristin St. Hilaire started for the Minutewomen and contributed three draw controls and two ground balls.
Syracuse is 7-0 against Massachusetts all-time, including a 4-0 mark in games contested at the Carrier Dome.
The Orangewomen will host California Tuesday, March 23. The draw is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
