
Zimmer and Joines Each Net Five Goals; SU Defeats California 17-9

The performance was a career-best for Joines, who bettered her previous personal-high of four goals, which she accomplished four times last season. Zimmer now has 19 goals for the Orangewomen in 2004 and she is one point away from tying the school’s all-time scoring record of 183 points held by Katrina Hable.
With the Orangewomen ahead 2-1, Calforinia got back-to-back goals from Schuyler Sokolow and Liz Reafsnyder 34 seconds apart to give the Bears a 3-2 lead at 4:43. Syracuse responded with six-goal run over the next 4:21 to take an 8-3 advantage with 20:33 left in the first period. Zimmer and Joines each scored twice during the stretch for the Orangewomen. Each squad scored two more goals in the opening period as the Orangewomen took a 10-5 lead into the locker room.
Syracuse native Colleen O’Mara opened the second half with a free-position goal at 31:32, but Zimmer found the back of the cage 52 seconds later to regain SU’s five-goal margin, 11-6. After a goal by the Bears’ Leanne Zilioli, the Orangewomen used a four goal scoring spurt to take control of the match, 15-7 at 45:18. Sophomore Meghan O’Connell tied her career high during run with two goals.
O’Connell finished with a personal-best three points in the contest. She picked up a helper on SU’s last goal, scored by sophomore Evelyn Long with one minute left. It was Long’s first goal as an Orangewoman. Junior Courtney Palladino set a career-best with two goals against the Bears. Palladino also finished with five draw controls. Freshman Jill DePetris contributed a goal and two assists and freshman Chelsea Strodel and Shari Appollon saw the first action of their careers against the Bears. Appollon finished with three shots and Strodel contributed one draw control. Sophomore Jennifer Kasel faced 27 shots and made 11 saves in goal for SU.
O’Mara paced the Bears with five points on two goals and three assists. Molly Brady added two goals for California.
As a team, the Orangemen recorded season-highs against the Bears in points (24), goals (17) and assists (7).
Syracuse will return to action Saturday, March 27 versus BIG EAST foe Connecticut at the Carrier Dome. The draw is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
