
DePetris Tallies Career-High Five Points in 21-9 Rout of Colgate

SYRACUSE, N.Y.
DePetris notched two goals in SU’s 9-0 run in the second part of the first half the helped the Orangewomen open up a commanding 13-5 lead at the 26:28 mark. DePetris topped her previous best three points, which she achieved three times earlier this season. She also led SU with four ground balls and added four draw controls.
With the Orangewomen trailing 5-4 at 13:50, SU went on a 9-0 tear during the next 12:38 to blow the game open. Junior Monica Joines started the run with consecutive goals and senior Leigh-Ann Zimmer and sophomore Melody Agnew also scored twice in the scoring burst. Colgate’s Kelly Winning recorded a free-position tally with 1:10 remaining in the first half to cut SU’s margin to seven, 13-6, at the break.
Winning opened the second half with a goal at 34:50, but the Orangewomen rattled off the game’s next four goals to increase their lead to 10, 17-7. A free-position goal by the Raiders’ Becky Ortolano made the score 17-8 at the 45:31 mark, but freshman Shari Appollon notched the first goal of her career to regain a 10-goal margin for the Orangewomen. After a goal by Colgate’s Tara Casey at 49:09, Syracuse closed the game with three straight goals resulting in the final margin.
Agnew finished with a career-bests of four points and three goals, while sophomore Stephanie Walker recorded a personal-best two assists in the contest. Walker has posted at least one assist in the last three games. She also contributed three draw controls versus the Raiders. Sophomore Anita Eldridge found the back of the cage for the first time in her career with a second-half goal, and junior Caitlyn Dragon picked up her third career goal in the match. Zimmer finished the game with five points (three goals, two assists) and Joines contributed three goals. Zimmer has recorded at least four points in six of SU’s seven games this year. Freshman Bethel Steele played a career high 17:02 between the pipes for SU after replacing starter Jennifer Kasel. Steele made one save in the contest, while Kasel finished with four stops.
Winning paced the Raiders with five points on two goals and three assists. Eden Haladay contributed two goals, as did Amanda Bradshaw.
Syracuse outshot Colgate 38-16 and held a 23-9 advantage in draw controls.
SU’s 21 goals is a season-high for the Orangewomen and the most since they tallied 21 goals against the Raiders in 1998. Syracuse has never lost to Colgate and holds a 7-0 advantage in the all-time series.
The Orangewomen go on the road for just the second time this season when they play at BIG EAST rival Rutgers on Saturday, April 3. The draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
