SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women’s tennis team handed Army a 5-2 defeat at the Drumlins Tennis Club Friday night behind strong performances from a pair of sophomores. Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) and Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each earned straight sets singles wins and teamed to pick up a victory at flight one doubles. SU is now 3-0 at home this season and has won 12 straight home matches dating back to 2004.

Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) and Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each earned straight sets singles wins and teamed to pick up a victory at flight one doubles. SU is now 3-0 at home this season and has won 12 straight home matches dating back to 2004.
SU won the doubles point with juniors Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif.) and Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) winning, 8-4, at number three, while junior Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.) and Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) won, 8-3, at flight two. Vaynberg/Zawadzki held on to win 8-6 at number one.
Vaynberg had an impressive showing at number one singles for the Orange, defeating Megan Noble of Army, 6-2, 6-0. Zawadzki shutout Army’s Kristen Flach in the opening set, 6-0, before going on to claim the second 6-3.
Bramante won the first set in her match at number three, 6-4, before Sarah Giles-Madden fought back to win the second 6-4 and the third-set superbreaker, 10-4. Freshman Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russia) made short work of her match at number four, winning 6-0, 6-1, while Lipton won in straights at number five, 6-4, 6-2.
SU improves to 4-3 with the victory, while Army moves to 5-6. SU is 2-0 this season against the Patriot League and will now turn its focus to the Ivy League as it next hits the courts on Sunday at 12 p.m. when Cornell visits SU at the Drumlins Tennis Club.
