No. 13 Syracuse Defeats Massachusetts, 15-9

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Five different student-athletes scored two goals as the No. 13 Orange beat Massachusetts, 15-9, on March 15 at the Carrier Dome. Graduate student Caitlyn Dragon (Jackson, N.J.) led the way with three points on a pair of goals and an assist.
Dragon also picked up a career-high six ground balls in the win. Freshmen Bridget Hamm (Penn Yan, N.Y.) and Kathryn Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) both tallied a pair of goals in the win, as did senior Meghan O’Connell (Camillus, N.Y.) and junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.). Junior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) tied a personal best with four caused turnovers and added four ground balls and a goal. Hamm added a season-high five ground balls and three draw controls while senior Melody Agnew (Winchester, Mass.) secured five ground balls and recorded a goal.
SU owned a large advantage in time of possession against the Minutewomen and fired 35 shots to UMass’ 16. Syracuse, the BIG EAST leader in fewest turnovers per game, only committed 12 tonight compared to the Minutewomen’s 21 miscues.
UMass jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first seven minutes of the game. Kerri Connery notched two of those goals and Kathleen Typadis added the other. Agnew took advantage of a free-position shot that tied the game, 1-1, at the 25:47 mark. O’Connell and Dragon scored just 42 seconds apart to tie the game, 3-3, with 22:08 remaining in the first. Typadis and Holly Drown responded with two more goals to put UMass up, 5-3. From that point, the Orange went on a 6-1 run to close out the half to take a 9-6 lead at the break. Hamm and Rowan sparked the scoring stretch with a combined four goals.
O’Connell and Fortune scored the first two tallies to open the second half to extend the lead to 11-6 with 24:01 left in the game. The closest UMass got was within four goals, 12-8, with 15:13 to go. SU outscored the Minutewomen 3-1 to close out the game and seal the win.
For UMass (2-4), Typadis posted a game-high four points on three goals and an assist. Connerty scored twice and added an assist, as did Jeannette Villapiano. Krissy Anderson stopped a career-high 16 shots in her first collegiate start in goal.
The Orange (4-2) is back in action when it hosts No. 18 Towson on Sunday, March 19, at 1:00 p.m. at the Carrier Dome. It is Camper Reunion Day on Sunday and all women’s lacrosse campers are invited to watch SU take on the Tigers.
