SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Kathryn Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) posted her fourth hat trick of the season and junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) scored twice to lead No. 13 Syracuse to a 7-5 triumph against No. 18 Towson on March 19 at the Carrier Dome. Senior Jen Kasel (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) stopped a season-high 15 shots in the win.
Seniors Meghan O’Connell (Camillus, N.Y.) and Caitlyn Dragon (Long Branch, N.J.) recorded the other goals for the Orange and freshman Megan Mosenson (Malvern, Pa.) dished out an assist. Dragon also tied her personal best with six ground balls. Sophomore Bridget Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) and freshman Bridget Hamm (Penn Yan, N.Y.) botch tied their career highs with five ground balls each.
SU’s seven goals in the win is the second-lowest scoring output in a victory all-time at Syracuse. The lowest is a 6-5 win against Boston University on April 22, 2000.
The Orange jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game. O’Connell took advantage of a free-position opportunity for the first goal of the game and then Shannon Witzel tied the game at the 14:40 mark. Just three minutes later, Mosenson found Dragon in front of the net, who one-timed a shot past the Towson goalkeeper to go ahead, 2-1. Rowan put SU up two when she converted on a free-position a minute later. The Orange was held scoreless the rest of the half, and the Tigers were able to tie it, 3-3, going into halftime. Brittany Woodfield and Julie Ondrako recorded the two goals for Towson.
In the second half, Becky Trumbo registered a free-position goal to give Towson its only lead of the game, 4-3, with 26:18 to play. Syracuse tallied four unanswered goals to put the game away. Fortune tied the game at 4-4 when she made a move to her left past a defender and slipped a shot past the keeper. She then scored again less than two minutes later to give SU the 5-4 lead at the 19:53 mark. Rowan scored the Orange’s last two goals to seal the win before Ondrako connected on a shot with 1:52 to go.
For Towson (3-3), Ondrako scored a pair of goals and secured five ground balls. Witzel also collected five ground balls and goalkeeper Mandy Corry saved 13 shots.
Syracuse (5-2) has a week off and returns to action on Sunday, March 26 when it faces Connecticut at 3:00 p.m. at the Carrier Dome. It is High School Team Day at the Dome, and all local high schools are invited to attend and show their school spirit. Teams can register their squads by emailing TEAMSU@syr.edu.
