NOTRE DAME, Ind. – No. 7 Notre Dame scored with no time left in regulation to escape with an 11-10 victory against the No. 13 Orange at Moose Krause Stadium on April 29. Heather Ferguson found Meghan Murphy at the top of the circle and Murphy tallied the game-winner as time expired. Junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) led Syracuse with three goals in the game.
Fortune’s hat trick gives her 46 goals this season, which places her second all-time in goals for a single season. She is six goals shy of matching Leigh-Ann Zimmer’s 52 tallies in 2004.
Freshman Kathryn Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals in the loss, upping her season total to 43. She is now tied for fourth on the single-season goals chart with Zimmer and Monica Joines.
The pair’s 89 combined goals this season is just three away from matching the all-time record for goals in a season by two teammates. Zimmer and Joines teamed up for 92 goals in 2004.
Junior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) added a goal and two assists for the Orange and senior Jen Kasel (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) was credited with 14 saves in a losing effort.
The Irish dominated Syracuse in draw controls, owning an 18-4 advantage in the game. In the first half, Notre Dame secured all 12 draws.
This is the second game this season that was decided in the final second. When the Orange hosted then-No. 3 Dartmouth in the Carrier Dome on Feb. 27, senior Caitlyn Dragon (Jackson, N.J.) scored with one second left in overtime to push SU to victory. The final score of that game was also 11-10.
Notre Dame was hot early and scored the first four goals of the game. Jill Byers assisted on the first two goals, and the other two came on free-position opportunities. From then on, the Orange defense cracked down and the offense produced and SU was able to tie the game, 5-5, with 2:04 left in the half. Ferguson connected on a free-position shot with no time left on the clock to give the Irish a 6-5 halftime edge.
In the second half, the two teams traded goals the whole way. The largest lead was when the Irish were up 8-6 at the 20:22 point. Fortune and sophomore Bridget Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) notched the game 8-8 with a pair of goals with 16:58 to go. The teams traded two more goals apiece to make it 10-10 with just under six minutes to go. With 21 seconds remaining, an SU clearing attempt failed and Notre Dame gained control of the ball. The Orange was charged with a foul with two seconds left, and the Irish connected on the ensuing play to steal the win at home.
For the Irish (12-3, 4-1), Crysti Foote recorded a game-high five goals. Ferguson registered a hat trick and the game-winning assist, and Byers notched a pair of assists.
The Orange (9-6, 2-3) returns to the Dome for its regular season finale on Sunday, May 7, when it takes on Pennsylvania.
