SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Kathryn Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) notched her ninth hat trick of the season as the No. 18 Orange lost to No. 20 Penn, 9-8, on May 7 at the Carrier Dome in the regular season finale for both teams. Rowan and junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) combined for four goals in the game, which makes them the most prolific scoring combination in Syracuse history in the same season.
Rowan and Fortune have compiled 93 goals this season, which surpasses the Orange record of 92 goals set by Leigh-Ann Zimmer and Monica Joines in 2004. Rowan’s three goals gives her 56 points this season, which is tied for fourth on the SU single-season list.
Fortune’s goal gives her 47 this year which is second on the single-season scoring list. Rowan upped her season total to 46, which is third on the ledger. Zimmer holds the school record with 52 goals in 2004.
Sophomore Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) notched a pair of goals and picked up six ground balls. Freshman Maggie Martin (Englewood, Colo.) scored a goal, as did senior Evelyn Long (Edgewater, Md.) in her last game at the Dome. Junior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) secured six ground balls and caused four turnovers in the loss.
The Orange came up with better numbers in almost every category in the game but still got the loss. Syracuse owned an edge in shots (24-19), ground balls (33-23), and turnovers (12-17).
The Syracuse offense saw a lot of action early in the game and SU was able to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Brady scored the first goal of the game at the 23:45 mark and Rowan followed suit two minutes later with another unassisted tally. The Quakers did not get on the board until there was 16:07 left in the first half, but that goal triggered a 4-0 run that gave Penn a 4-2 lead. Ali Ryan assisted on a pair of the goals in that stretch. The Orange fought right back and scored the last three goals of the half to take a 5-4 lead at the break. Fortune notched her goal with 4:49 to go and then Rowan scored her final two goals in the last 2:55 to give Syracuse the halftime lead.
Ryan opened the scoring in the second half less than two minutes in and then Chrissy Muller scored another just over a minute later to help Penn regain the lead, 6-5, with 27:35 to go. Senior Melody Agnew (Winchester, Mass.) and Long took advantage of a 2-on-1 opportunity to even the score 6-6. Agnew drew the only Quaker defender left on a fast break to her, and she dished off to Long for the equalizer. Muller gave Penn the lead again, 7-6, with another goal, but Martin made the most of a free-position opportunity to tie the game again, 7-7, with 16:43 left in the game. With 11:21 on the clock, Brady scored her second goal after DePetris smartly flipped a loose ball from a crowd to an open Brady. Brady then took it down the field and finished the job. The Quaker offense, after being shut out for the last 14 minutes, came alive at the end. Allison Ambrozy deadlocked the game again, 8-8, with 8:22 left on a free-position. Ambrozy would strike again off of a feed from Muller to put the game away, 9-8, with 2:37 to go. Fortune had a free-position opportunity with 52 seconds left, but the Penn defense was able to block her shot.
For the Quakers (10-6), Muller had a game-high four points on three goals and an assist. Ryan notched a goal and two assists, and Ambrozy finished with three goals. Karrie Moore was stellar in goal with 13 saves.
Syracuse (9-7) will await its NCAA Tournament destiny when the field is announced on Monday, May 8, at 8:00 p.m. live on CSTV. The complete bracket will be posted on ncaasports.com following the show.
