
Orange Begins Homestand Tuesday Versus Hartwick

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - One of the premier Central New York soccer rivalries is renewed when Syracuse steps out of conference to host Hartwick on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Live streaming video and audio of the match is available on SUathletics.com via Orange All Access. In addition, Tuesday is also "Community Outreach Night" as the Orange welcomes various community organizations and their families to the game.
The Hartwick contest is the start of a three-game homestand for the Orange that runs through the Adelphi match on Oct. 20. Overall, Syracuse (2-10-0, 1-6-0) will benefit from playing five of its last six games of the regular season at home. The only road match left on SU's slate is a trip to Chicago on Oct. 24 to face DePaul.
JONES THIRD IN THE LEAGUE IN SAVES
Redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Jones is ranked third in the BIG EAST in saves this week. He also lists fourth in the conference in saves per game. Jones has 57 stops in 11 games this season, good for an average of 5.18 saves per contest. Jones has made at least three saves in all 11 games he's played, including a season-best 12 in his first start at Colgate on Sept. 7.
TOWNSEND FINDING HIS OFFENSIVE STRIDE
Senior Elliott Townsend scored the second goal of his career against Villanova on Oct. 7. Townsend's goal came at the 81:09 mark and closed the game's scoring. It was his second straight match with a goal after he netted his first in the Orange's 3-0 win at Rutgers on Oct. 2. For the season, Townsend is tied for third on the team with two goals and four points. He has started the team's last four games.
SCOUTING HARTWICK
The Hawks are 7-2-2 overall and own a 3-0-0 record in Mid-American Conference play in 2009. Hartwick is undefeated in its last seven games (6-0-1) and hasn't lost since a 1-0 defeat to Bucknell in the annual Mayor's Cup on Sept. 11. The Hawks have five shutouts during the stretch and have outscored their opponents, 12-2.
Dan Summers leads the squad with nine points and three goals and the Hawks boast eight players with at least one goal on the year. In addition to Summers, Nick Roydhouse has eight points and has served as the team offensive catalyst, leading the Hawks with four assists. Roydhouse is one of five Hawks to start all 11 matches this season. Defensively, goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo has played all 1,040 minutes between the posts for the Hawks. He ranks fifth nationally in goals-against average (0.35) and has seven shutouts.
Head coach Ian McIntyre is in his seventh season at his alma mater. He owns a 104-62-30 career coaching record and is 68-34-23 at Hartwick. McIntyre's first heading coaching stop was at Oneonta State (1999 to 2002).
SYRACUSE-HARTWICK SERIES
The Orange and the Hawks met at least once every season from 1977 to 2007 with Hartwick holding a 16-11-5 advantage in the all-time series. Syracuse is 1-0-2 against Hartwick in the last three meetings. One of the most notable encounters in the series came on Nov. 17, 1984 as Syracuse made its NCAA Tournament debut against its Central New York rival. All four goals in the contest came in the second half as Hartwick posted a 3-1 victory to advance in the tournament.
