SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Tina Romagnuolo scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season, but a late score by Seton Hall gave the Pirates a 2-1 victory against Syracuse on Saturday, Oct. 17 in South Orange N.J.
Romagnuolo increased her team-leading point total to 14 with her performance. Her seven goals are the most by an SU freshman since Natalie Galas scored seven times during the 2001 campaign.
Both teams generated scoring chances in the first half, as the squads combined for 10 shots. Seton Hall (5-10-1, 1-7-1) recorded the only goal in the opening stanza in the 33rd minute. Nicki Gross put the ball in play on a corner kick to Ashley Beamish. Beamish passed the ball to Danielle Schulmann, who scored her fourth goal of the season.
The Orange (4-10-3, 1-7-1) tied the score, 1-1, in the 58th minute when Romagnuolo took a pass in the box from freshman Rosina Callisto, turned and found the back of the net with a shot from 10 yards away. Syracuse continued to apply pressure, but couldn't convert on its offensive opportunities before Seton Hall took the lead for good with less than four minutes left in regulation when Stephanie Soma scored off an assist from Schulmann. The Orange created two more scoring chances in the final minutes, but Romagnuolo's shot was saved by the Pirates' Elizabeth Bond and Callisto's try went wide as Seton Hall recorded the 2-1 victory.
"It's disappointing because we outplayed Seton Hall in every aspect," said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. "We created more opportunities and we were the more dangerous team. We've been mathematically eliminated from the BIG EAST Tournament, which is disappointing, especially for our seniors. It would have been a nice way to conclude their careers at Syracuse.
"The last few games we have shown we are a good team, but we've had a difficult time scoring. We have two more games left next weekend and it's all about playing for the seniors."
Syracuse outshot Seton Hall, 14-8, and had seven corner kicks to three for the Pirates. SU goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan recorded four saves, as did Bond for Seton Hall.
The Orange plays its final two games of the 2009 season next weekend at the SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse hosts Marquette on Friday at 7 p.m. and USF on Sunday at noon.
