SYRACUSE , N.Y. -- Syracuse held Marquette scoreless for more than 100 minutes before the Golden Eagles recorded the only goal of the game in the first minute of the second overtime period for a 1-0 victory at the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday, Oct. 23.
The game-winner came at the 100:39 mark when Marquette's Kerry McBride served the ball into the box to Rachael Sloan. Sloan turned and fired a shot into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season. The victory gives Marquette (12-4-2, 6-2-2) sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST's American Division.
Both teams had scoring chances in regulation. Syracuse's best opportunity came in the first half when sophomore Amanda Morris got by Marquette goalkeeper Natalie Kulla on a breakaway and only had a defender to beat, but her shot went wide.
The Orange (4-11-3, 1-8-1) successfully defended against nine Marquette corners, including five in the first half. Syracuse goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan recorded seven saves, increasing her season total to 82, which ranks fifth on Syracuse's single-season record list. Kulla finished with one save.
Syracuse plays its final game of the 2009 season on Sunday when it hosts USF at noon at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange's senior class will be honored during a halftime ceremony for their dedication to the program. Admission is free of charge.
