SYRACUSE – Junior back Maggie Befort tipped in a pass from junior forward Lindsey Conrad in the 46th-minute to give the sixth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team a 1-0 victory versus No. 20 Albany this afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange improved to 11-1 with its eighth consecutive win, while the Great Danes move to 8-3. It was Syracuse's seventh top-20 victory of the year.
“Albany is a really good team, but Maggie and Lindsey made a play for us,” head coach Ange Bradley said. “Playing back-to-back games is always tough, but we overcame some obstacles and persevered.”
The two teams played scoreless hockey until Befort, Conrad and the Orange converted a penalty corner to give Syracuse the only goal it would need.
Freshman goalkeeper Leann Stiver made two saves in her second career shutout. Christine Hoffman and Kristi Troch combined to make three saves for the Great Danes.
Syracuse held a 10-3 advantage in shots, including a 7-1 edge in the second half. SU also held a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners, with an 8-2 edge in the second half.
The Orange returns to action on Friday when it hosts BIG EAST foe Georgetown at J.S. Coyne Stadium at 3 p.m. The game will be webcast on Orange All Access.
