
Orange Hosts St. John's In Season Finale

SRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange men's soccer team brings its 2009 campaign to a close on Sunday, Nov. 1 when it hosts St. John's its season finale at 6 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. The game was originally scheduled to be played Wednesday, but heavy rains forced the match to be moved to Sunday.
Both teams will be playing for the second consecutive night. Syracuse tied its season high for goals in a 3-1 victory against Cincinnati yesterday. The Red Storm also posted a victory Saturday, defeating DePaul by the score of 2-0 at Belson Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT
Syracuse snapped a six-game losing streak with its win against the Bearcats. All three SU goals came in the second half after the Orange fell behind 1-0 late in the first period. Senior Hansen Woodruff tied his career high with two scores and junior Justin Arena tallied his first of the season in the 74th minute for the eventual match winner. Syracuse dominated the statistics, outshooting Cincinnati, 17-8, including 12 shots on goal. The Orange also registered a season-high eight corner kicks in the match.
ST. JOHN'S MATCH THE FINAL GAME FOR SEVEN SENIORS
Sunday night's season finale against the Red Storm is the final college match for seven Syracuse seniors as Woodruff, Brien Chamney, Kenny Caceros, Tom Perevegyencev, Pete Hill, Elliott Townsend and Sean Summerville will take the field at the SU Soccer Stadium for the last time.
Woodruff will go down as one of Syracuse's best offensive players of all-time. He lists ninth on SU's career goals list (27) and he is tied for ninth on the school's career scoring list (66 points). He leads the club with 15 points and six goals in 2009.
Perevegyencev is second on the team in overall scoring (13 points) and goals (5) this year. For his career, he has 15 goals and six assists.
Townsend has contributed a pair of goals this season and has appeared in 32 career games.
Caceros is one of two players to start every match in 2009 and he has played in 47 matches since coming to Syracuse from Maine prior to the start of the 2007 season. He has two assists since joining the Orange, both coming this year.
Hill and Chamney have been the corner stones of Syracuse's backline the last three seasons. Chamney has started 47 of the 48 games he's played in his career and Hill has started 56 of 64 career matches. Hill had a streak of 45 consecutive starts before missing time earlier this season due to injury. Chamney has figured into 15 Orange shutouts in his career, while Hill has been a part of 20 clean sheets since 2006.
Summerville transferred to Syracuse from Roberts Wesleyan for the 2008 season. He has played in 14 games this year wtih nine starts after appearing in two matches a year ago.
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
The Red Storm climbed back into the national polls this week on the strenghth of an eight-game unbeaten streak. St. John's checked in at No. 22 in this week's Soccer America rankings and extended its unbeaten streak to nine games (4-0-5) with its win yesterday against DePaul. The Red Storm has already clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Championship and is currently third in the Red Division standings behind Louisville and USF with 19 points. The Red Storm could leap-frog USF and grab the division's No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the conference championship with a victory against the Orange Sunday.
Defense has long been a Red Storm staple and this year is no different. St. John's has allowed 10 goals on the season and has been scored upon just three times in the second half. Goalkeeper Derby Carrillo owns a 0.56 goals-against average and has sevn shutouts. BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Joel Gustafsson leads a St. John's back four that has surrendered multiple goals only once this season.
Offensively, junior midfielder Sverre Wegge Gundhus leads the team with 15 points on five goals and five assists. Junior Tadeu Terra is second on the squad with four goals.
Dr. Dave Masur is in his 19th year at the St. John's helm. He has guided the Red Storm to four NCAA College Cup appearances, including the 1996 NCAA title and a berth in the 2008 national semifinals. He is 330-104-67 as a college head coach and he recently coached his 500th career game, a 2-1 win against Cincinnati, on Oct. 24.
SYRACUSE-ST. JOHN'S SERIES
St. John's leads the all-time series against the Orange, 16-7-5. The Orange posted one of the signature victories of the Dean Foti Era when it defeated the Red Storm, which eventually went on to win the national championship, by the score of 2-0 in 1996. Syracuse won the first two meetings of the series back in 1982.
