
Orange Sweeps Binghamton, 3-0

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior middle blocker Sarah Morton posted a match-best 12 kills while hitting .346 to lead the Orange to a 3-0 sweep of Binghamton on Tuesday night at West Gymnasium. Syracuse is an unbeaten, 7-0 against New York state foes this season, having defeated Siena, Buffalo, St. John's, Niagara, Cornell, Colgate and Binghamton.
Senior outside hitter Annabelle Pellerin was second on the team with nine kills while sophomore Erin Little chipped in eight. Rookie setter Laura Homann directed the Orange attack, dishing out a match-best 35 assists.
Senior libero Shanetha McLaurin led the back row defense with a team-high 11 digs while Homann, sophomore outside hitter Noemie Lefebvre and senior outside hitter Kacie MacTavish each had five. Morton and Little led front row with six total blocks apiece as the Orange out blocked the Bearcats 11.0-8.0.
Syracuse opened the first set in dominant fashion, as Little and Morton combined for four-straight blocks, boosting the Orange to an early, 7-2 edge. The Bearcats battled back to tie the set, 15-15 and continued to drive taking a 24-22 lead. With Binghamton one point from victory, Hinz tallied a kill out of the middle and fired off a pair of service aces to give SU a 25-24 advantage. The Orange completed the comeback, taking a 1-0 lead in the match with a 27-25 first-set win.
The back-and-forth play continued into the second set, with the two teams tying on six separate occasions. Syracuse held the lead through the majority of the set, but the hosts continued to rally, knotting the game, 18-18. The two teams traded points through the remainder of the set, but the Orange stayed out in front, taking a two-set lead with a 25-23 win.
Syracuse continued to stay out in front of the Bearcats in the third set, despite the close play between the two teams. The Orange took a late-game six-point lead, 21-15 in the third set and never looked back, completing the 3-0 sweep with a 25-20 win.
The Orange wraps up its regular season schedule on Friday, November 13 as it hosts BIG EAST foe Villanova at 7 p.m. in Manley Field House. Syracuse will honor the careers of seniors MacTavish, McLaurin, Morton and Pellerin in a pre-match Senior Day ceremony.
