SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Lisa Mullan scored the game-winning goal with 1:09 remaining in overtime to lift the Orange past Princeton, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Syracuse swept the two-game series against the Tigers to conclude its 2009 action. The Orange improves its record to 11-7-1, while Princeton is 7-8-1.
“Here it is," said head coach Paul Flanagan. “We talked to the group about how there's nothing better than winning in overtime. They really got excited about it. It's our rink. We played so well last night, we weren't going to let this one slip away from us. I thought we took control in the overtime, not just because we scored the goal, but we were doing a good job putting pressure on them. I thought our girls had a lot more gas left in their tank.”
Despite being outshot, 25-14, in the first three periods, senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel was able to turn away all shots and keep the game scoreless for 60 minutes. The SU penalty killing unit was perfect on all seven occasions, while the Tigers held the Orange scoreless for all seven power-play opportunities.
Syracuse took a time out with less than two seconds remaining in regulation. The Orange attempted to get a handle on the puck following the faceoff, but the shot just missed the post as time expired. As time continued winding down in overtime, freshman Isabel Menard passed to Mullan, who shot over the head of Rachel Weber. The puck hit the post and fell to just over the over the line and into the net to give the Orange the sudden death victory.
The Orange will take a break for the holidays before returning to host Colgate on Saturday, January 2 at 4 p.m.
