SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 10 Syracuse University ice hockey team lost, 5-4, in overtime to Colgate on Saturday evening. The Orange scored the first three goals of the contest, but the Raiders came from behind, scoring three unanswered goals to force the overtime. The Orange is now 11-8-1 on the season, while Colgate improves to 5-12-3.
The Orange came out hot, outshooting Colgate, 12-6, in the first period. Sophomore Lisa Mullan scored less than three minutes into the game, while freshman Holly Carrie-Mattimoe added a power-play marker less than two minutes later to give the Orange the early two-point advantage. Syracuse controlled the game when junior Julie Rising scored another power-play goal in the 12th minute. Despite an Orange dominated first period, Colgate's Brittany Philips was able to sneak a shot past senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel with 17:02 left. However, it didn't take long for Syracuse to answer, as freshman Isabel Menard capitalized on a power-play opportunity to hold the 4-1 lead going into the second.
Colgate fought back from the three-point deficit and Evan Minnick scored the lone goal in the second period. The momentum began to shift and Beth Rotenberg netted Colgate's third at the 8:14 mark of the final period. With the Raider trailing, 4-3, and a penalty called on freshman Erin Burns, CU pulled Kimberly Sass from the net to hold a six-on-four advantage. A swarm of purple jerseys surrounded SU's goal and Marissa Dombovy was able to sneak one past Schoedel in the last 15 seconds of regulation to force overtime.
Syracuse kept the puck in its control for the majority of the overtime period, but Colgate's Brittany Philips got a handle on it in the final 10 seconds to score the game-winner and settle the final 5-4 score.
Schoedel had 31 saves, while Sass turned away 32-of-36 shots.
The Orange faces another upstate New York rival when it travels to Cornell on Tuesday, January 5 for a 7 p.m. game.
