SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Former Syracuse soccer standouts Aaron Bonser and Ryan Hall are two of the latest additions to the New Jersey Ironmen of the Xtreme Soccer League. Both Bonser and Hall joined the Ironmen after playing for the California Cougars. In addition, Gabriel Gervais announced last month his retirement from the USL's Montreal Impact. Gervais was the league's Defender of the Year three times (2002, 2003, 2006) during his career.
Bonser played in 65 games on the Orange's back line and helped the team post 20 shutouts from 2003-07. He started all 18 matches and contributed to six shutouts during his senior season. During his time at Syracuse, Bonser was a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star.
Hall, a defender for the Orange from 1999 to 2002, recorded a total of nine goals and 15 assists during his SU career. Since joining the professional indoor ranks, he has competed for the Cleveland Force, Chicago Storm and California Cougars. In his second year as a Cougar, Hall had a league-leading 61 blocks. He tallied a total of 157 blocks in 103 regular-season matches during his career with California.
Gervais announced his retirement from professional soccer on Jan. 6. His spent nine years in the United Soccer League, including seven with the Impact.
“This was a very difficult decision to make,” Gervais said when he retired. “I always said that I would continue playing as long as my body would allow me to, but in light of the various injuries I suffered in 2008, I have to come to terms with the fact that I can no longer play.”
Gervais was awarded the Giuseppe-Saputo Trophy as the Impact's MVP in 2004 and became the first player in league history to win three Defender of the Year awards when he earned the honor for the final time in 2006.
At Syracuse, Gervais was a two-time captain and played for the Orange from 1997 to 1999. He averaged 1.25 points per game during his career, the third-best mark in school history, and ranks third on the SU career scoring list with 71 points. Gervais was a two-time ALL-BIG EAST First Team honoree and was named to the NSCAA All-Region First Team in 1999 and the second team in 1998.
