SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange men's soccer team kicks off the 2009 season with a morning practice on Saturday, Aug. 15. The team will have 17 training days leading up to the season opener at Binghamton on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Orange head coach Dean Foti returns eight letterwinners, including six starters, from 2008 when Syracuse posted an 8-6-3 overall record. Chief among them is senior preseason all-conference selection Hansen Woodruff, who is the team's leading active goal scorer with 21 tallies.
Defensively, Syracuse should be solid once again with three of its starting back four returning, including seniors Pete Hill and Brien Chamney. The pair has combined to play 86 collegiate matches, and Hill has started the last 40 games for the Orange dating back to 2006.
Overall, the 2009 Orange roster features seven seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, six redshirt freshmen and 14 true freshmen.
Following its match against Binghamton, Syracuse will host Ivy League foe Cornell in its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The match is the first of nine home dates for the Orange this season. Admission for all SU soccer home games is free.
