BOSTON – The third-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team opens the 2009 season this weekend when it travels east to do battle with Northeastern on Fri., Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. and New Hampshire on Sun., Aug. 30 at 1 p.m.
“We have worked very hard the last couple of weeks and have enjoyed getting to know each other as the 2009 Syracuse field hockey team,” head coach Ange Bradley said. “We are excited to compete with Northeastern and New Hampshire as both opponents provide us with opportunities to continue to learn more about ourselves and grow into a championship caliber team.“
The Huskies hold a 10-3 edge in the all-time series which dates back to 1981. The Orange is 1-4 all-time in Boston with the lone win (4-0) coming on SU's last visit to Bean Town (1997). Three of the four games have been decided in overtime, including the last meeting (2001).
The Wildcats hold a 4-1 advantage in the all-time series which dates back to 1992. SU defeated New Hampshire, 10-0, last season at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Volunteer assistant coach Shannon Taylor and sophomore midfielder Martina Loncarica both had eight points off three goals and two assists in the contest.
Syracuse was selected by the conference coaches to win the regular-season title in 2009. In addition, Loncarica and junior forward Lindsey Conrad were both voted unanimously to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. Junior back Maggie Befort was also named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team.
Syracuse has five of its top six scorers from 2008 returning, including Loncarica and Conrad. Loncarica racked up 65 points last season on 17 goals and a league-leading 31 assists, while Conrad combined for 51 points from 21 goals and nine assists. SU's defense is bolstered Befort, whose versatility provided 25 assists in 2008, second in league standings behind teammate Loncarica.
