Senior Kacie MacTavish logged a team-best 14 kills and freshman Laura Homann dished out 39 assists in her collegiate debut as the Orange opened its 2009 campaign with a 3-0 victory against New Hampshire in its first match of the Big Orange Tournament.
“It was a good start to the season,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “We were happy with how it went all the way around. The team did well defensively, our serve receive was good and we kept our errors low.”
The Orange trailed only once through the entire game, falling behind 2-1 at the beginning of the first set before jumping out to a 25-20 game one victory and 25-18, 25-19 wins in game two and three, respectively.
“We talked before the weekend started and we really wanted to focus on playing through the whole match and the whole weekend,” LaMarche said. “We were trying not to let them get runs and tried to keep our energy up. We were able to do that tonight.”
Outside hitter Noemie Lefebvre was on the mark, leading the team with a .370 attack percentage while adding 11 kills and a team-high 15 digs. Senior Annabelle Pellerin added eight kills for the Orange while Sarah Morton and Hayley Todd contributed six each.
Senior Shanetha McLaurin helped pace the team defensively, ranking second with 14 digs. MacTavish added 10 digs, Homann had seven and junior Sarah Hayes added four.
Syracuse is back in action tomorrow in the Big Orange Tournament at Manley Field House. The Orange faces Siena at 12:30 p.m. before concluding with Sacramento State at 7 p.m.
