
Orange Opens BIG EAST Play with 3-2 Victory at Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The seventh-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team scored three unassisted goals in the second half in a 3-2 victory at No. 16 Louisville in the BIG EAST Conference opener for both teams. The Orange improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Cardinals move to 4-3, 0-1.
“It was a good result against a very physical and aggressive Louisville team,” head coach Ange Bradley said. “It was a game of two halves and I am proud of the adjustments our team made at halftime to open up the game. “
UofL's Haley Jurich opened up the scoring at 25:36, getting the ball past graduate goalkeeper Ashleigh McGowan after a scramble in front of the cage created by a Louisville fast break.
Freshman back Amy Kee tied the score at 1-1, scoring off a rebound from a penalty corner at the 41:56 mark. Sophomore forward Heather Susek gave Syracuse a 2-1 advantage after dribbling in from outside the circle to the right side and firing a shot into the left corner of the cage at 53:12.
Louisville tied the score at 2-2 off a tipped penalty corner by Nicole Youman with just 10 minutes remaining in the game.
Sophomore midfielder Martina Loncarica scored the game winner for the Orange with a little more than three minutes left in the contest. The sophomore scored off a rebound from a Kee shot generated by a SU penalty corner.
McGowan recorded four saves in her first complete game for Syracuse. Heather Bustanoby also registered four for Louisville.
The Orange outshot the Cardinals, 11-7, including an 8-3 advantage in the second half. SU also had a 6-3 penalty corner advantage, including a 6-3 tally in the second stanza.
Syracuse remains in Louisville for a matchup with Michigan tomorrow at 3 p.m.
