
Tennis Advances in Eastern Championships

West Point, N.Y.- The Syracuse tennis team is off to a strong start in the Eastern Championship tournament being held at West Point this weekend. Freshman CC Sardinha, sophomore Emily Harman, and junior Simone Kalhorn all have advanced to the quarterfinal round in singles play while the doubles pairing of sophomore Victoria Ford and junior Jacquelynn Tang also made it to the quarterfinal round in doubles action.
Sardinha, who had a bye in the first round, swept Belfin Sunbul of Seton Hall in the second round to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. Harman defeated Emme Leibowicz of Binghamton in preliminary play and then Ece Firat of St. John's in the second round. Kalhorn, who also had a bye in the first round, beat Christen Cadigan of Rhode Island for her ticket to the quarterfinals. All three Syracuse players were seeded first in their respective flights.
Junior Christina Tan, who was seeded second in her singles flight, will still see more action as well after being topped by Elmine Botes of Fairleigh Dickinson in the second round of singles action. Tan plays today in the first singles consolation round.
In doubles play, the pairing of Ford and Tang defeated the Sacred Heart pairing of Ashley Amalfe and Sonia Mideva in the first round to advance. Sophomores Allison Haynes and Alessondra Parra were also paired for doubles play, but they fell to Quinnipiac in the second round after beating Rhode Island in the preliminary round. Parra and Haynes will also see more action in the doubles consolation rounds to be held today.
Quarterfinal play in singles action begins today as Sardinha, Harman and Kalhorn take on foes from Sacred Heart, Cornell and UMass, respectively. Ford and Tang will continue their doubles action in the quarterfinal round today as well as they take on Army.
