SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange will make its home debut on Saturday, Sept. 5 it hosts Cornell in its home opener at 7 p.m. in the SU Soccer Stadium. Even though Syracuse hasn't played the Big Red since 2005, the team will be familiar with at least one member of the Cornell club - head coach Jaro Zawislan, who will be making his college coaching debut after serving as SU's assistant coach from 2002 to 2008.
The game will be the first of two in three days for the Orange, which will travel to Colgate on Monday, Sept. 7. Admission for the Cornell match and every SU home contest is free.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Orange has posted a winning record at the SU Soccer Stadium in 11 of its first 13 seasons at the facility. SU went 5-2-2 at home in 2008. The Orange record for most wins in a season at the SU Soccer Stadium is six (1996, 1998, 2005). The Orange owns an overall SU Soccer Stadium record of 60-43-9. The team recorded its 50th Soccer Stadium victory against Hartwick on Oct. 10, 2006.
Prior to the opening of the facility, the Orange played its home games at Coyne Field and the Carrier Dome. During the Orange's magical run to the 1982 BIG EAST title, it won a school-record nine home contests, going 3-0 at Coyne Field and 6-2 in the friendly confines of the Dome. The Orange is 155-75-23 since 1980 in games contested in Syracuse.
ORANGE FIRST TEAM TO SCORE TWICE AT BEARCATS SPORTS COMPLEX
Syracuse notched a pair of goals in its season opener at Binghamton on Sept. 1 to become the first visiting men's team to score multiple goals at the Bearcats Sports Complex since it opened in 2007. The Orange's game against the Bearcats was the 16th match played at the facility. Senior Tom Perevegyencev opened the game's scoring in the 25th minute to give SU a 1-0 lead. Classmate Hansen Woodruff registered the Orange's second goal when he converted a breakaway chance in the 52nd minute to put SU in front again, 2-1.
BRODE NETS FIRST COLLEGE POINT
Freshman midfielder Mark Brode tallied the first point of his career with an assist in his first college contest on Sept. 1 at Binghamton. Brode started the match and played 74 minutes against the Bearcats. His assist came on SU's first goal of the season. Brode's helper marked the second consecutive year the team has had a freshman register a point in their collegiate debut. Raoul Meister was awarded an assist in SU's season-opening win against Canisius last year.
NEW FACES DOT ORANGE STARTING LINEUP IN OPENER
Syracuse had six players make their first career starts in its season-opener at Binghamton. Freshman midfielder Mark Brode and junior midfielder Manny Sevillano each made their Orange debuts Tuesday. Defensively, junior Daniel McGowan, a transfer from Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., and redshirt freshman Colin Haggerty and senior Sean Summerville also earned their first starting nods. Summerville played in two games last season, while Haggerty redshirted. Goalie Evan Johnson received his first start between the posts. Johnson came to Syracuse from Saint Louis where he redshirted in 2008. He made two saves against the Bearcats.
A FAMILIAR FACE ON THE CORNELL SIDELINE
First-year Cornell head coach Jaro Zawislan will be making his college coaching debut in a very familiar environment - the SU Soccer Stadium. Zawislan served as SU's assistant coach from 2002 to 2008 before accepting the head coaching position at Cornell in July of 2009. While with the Orange, Zawislan tutored the goalies and was an integral part of the Orange's recruiting success, helping to bring previous standouts like Richard Asante, Kyle Hall and Robert Cavicchia to Syracuse.
SCOUTING CORNELL
Zawislan has his work cut out for him rebuilding a Cornell program that finished with a 1-15 record in 2008. The team's only win was a 2-0 decision against Lafayette. The Big Red managed just eight goals on the year, while surrendering 43. Senior Matt Bouraee tallied three of Cornell's eight goals a season ago and is Cornell's top returning scorer. The Big Red's other returning goal scorers are junior Scott Caldwell (two goals) and sophomore Pedro Pereira (one goal).
The trio of sophomore Kyle Parsons, junior Matt Stengel and senior Matt Devitt is expected to anchor the back line. All three players appeared in at least 10 games in 2008. Junior Scott Brody is the team's most experienced keeper. He made 35 saves and posted a 2.27 goals-against average last season.
SYRACUSE-CORNELL SERIES
The Big Red is one of the Orange's longest soccer rivals and Cornell leads the all-time series between the two schools, 34-24-6. The rivalry dates back to 1921, the second year in which Syracuse fielded a varsity team. The two schools have met on the pitch consistently throughout the years and played once every season from 1980 to 2005. The Orange's current four-game winning streak against Cornell is its second-longest in the series (Syracuse won five consecutive encounters from 1929 to 1937).
