ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 10 women's ice hockey team (11-8-1) will face its sixth ranked opponent this season when it travels to face No. 8 Cornell on Tuesday, January 5 at 7 p.m. It is the first road game for the Orange since Nov. 24, 2009 when it traveled to another upstate rival, Colgate.
Last Time Out
Syracuse lost, 5-4, in overtime to Colgate on Saturday, January 2. The Orange scored the first three goals of the contest, but the Raiders came from behind, scoring three unanswered goals to force the overtime. SU came out hot, outshooting Colgate, 12-6 in the first period. Three different Orange also scored in the first period, including sophomore Lisa Mullan, freshman Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and junior Julie Rising. Freshman Isabel Menard capitalized on a power-play opportunity to hold the 4-1 lead going into the second. However, Colgate fought back from the three-point deficit and scored in the last 15 seconds to go into the extra period.
Menard is Offensive Threat
Freshman Isabel Menard scored one goal and tallied one assist against Cornell, marking the fifth consecutive game that she has scored at least one point. Menard scored a goal in the first game against Princeton and dished out the assist on the lone Orange marker to give SU the overtime victory on Dec. 12. SU's sweep of the Tigers resulted in its first national ranking. Menard has been named the CHA Rookie of the Week four times this season, which is more than any other freshman in the league.
Syracuse-Cornell Series
It is the first meeting between the two schools. The Orange is 7-5-1 against first-time opponents and is 6-2 against ECAC teams this season.
Scouting the Big Red
Colgate is 8-4-2 this season after last shutting out Brown, 5-0. It is currently ranked eighth in both national polls. The Big Red is led by sophomore Catherine White, who has five goals and 10 assists this season. Sophomore forward Chelsea Karpenko had a team-high six goals, while freshman defenseman Laura Fortino heads the Cornell defense with eight points (3g, 5a). Sophomore goaltender Amanda Mazzotta has been in net for every game and has recorded a .917 save percentage and a 1.57 goals-against average.
